GMO means, genetically modified organism. Genetic modification involves the mutation, insertion, or deletion of genes. When genes are inserted, they usually come from a different species. An example of one type of genetic modification is crossing a salmon gene with a tomato to make the tomato more resistant to cold.
The most controversial genetic modification is brought to us by Monsanto. The Monsanto GMO corn, soybeans, sugar beets, and more are genetically modified to take large doses of their product, Roundup (pesticide), without the plant dying. Sound like science fiction to you? Here’s another fact. If some of Monsanto’s GMO seeds blow in to another farmers field, which could be miles away, Monsanto sues the farmer for patent infringement since the GMO seeds are patented by Monsanto. Another horrific side effect to GMO plants is once the weeds are killed from Roundup or other pesticides, the upcoming generations of weeds adapt creating the need for stronger, more deadly pesticides.
I have only scratched the surface, there are GMO mosquitoes, GMO salmon, and more GMO’s than you know: Whole Foods FAQs and Council For Responsible Genetics.
Now for the health hazards to human beings, the planet, and all other forms of life.
Almost every other country, even China, require labeling of GMO food, but not in the U.S., at least not so far. So the next time you have an opportunity to vote for GMO labeling you’ll know what all the fuss is about.
PLEASE REMEMBER; THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID GMO’S IS TO BUY ORGANIC FOOD. Voting with your money sends the loudest message.
Here’s to robust health!
